Stock-specific harvest decision rules for the John dory (JDO 7), red gurnard (GUR 7), and snapper (SNA 7) fisheries within the Challenger Fisheries Management Area

Trophia has been funded by MFish to Develop stock-specific harvest decision rules for the John dory (JDO 7), red gurnard (GUR 7), and snapper (SNA 7) fisheries.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

  1. Develop a harvest decision rule for the JDO 7 fishery using fisheries dependent and independent information to manage biomass at the long-term average and take advantage of periods of higher than average biomass.

  1. Develop stock specific harvest decision rules for the GUR 7 and SNA 7 fisheries using fisheries dependent and independent information to increase biomass over the next five years and enable commercial catch increases providing biomass continues to increase.

MPE involves evaluating several candidate MPs and selecting the one that provides the best performance with respect to management objectives. Management objectives have already been developed for the target Fishstocks as part of the draft Challenger Inshore Finfish Fisheries Plan.

For JDO 7:

  • manage the biomass at the long term average, and

  • take commercial advantage of periods of higher than average biomass.

For SNA 7 and GUR 7,

  • increase the biomass over the next five years, and

  • enable commercial catch increases providing biomass continues to increase.

For each management objective we will define,

  • performance measures – simulation variables, or combination of variables, that are used to reflect the management objective in each simulation year,

  • performance statistics – a summary statistic used the aggregate a performance measure over all years,

  • performance standard – if applicable, a criterion which the performance statistic must meet.
